Extreme weather protection
Designed for some 5,000 athletes competing in the various sporting events of the All-Africa Games in Nigeria in 2003, the National Sports Stadium complex in Abuja can accommodate 60,000 spectators.Positioned on the outskirts of the city, this ultra modern multipurpose sports arena is considered by many as one of the greatest architectural landmarks in the city of Abuja. Supported by a cable network weighing 800 tons, the lightweight curving membrane structure shelters the spectators and forms the key element of the architecture. 31,000 sq/m of PTFE-coated glass fibre membrane provides the protection against unrelenting sunshine and extreme tropical downpours.
