Covering The Taxman
The award winning design by Michael Hopkins and Partners presented a major challenge to engineers Ove Arup & Partners, and the team at Hightex and pushed the parameters of building design to new limits. The dramatic end result received worldwide acclaim. The PTFE Fibreglass membrane roof is suspended from four main masts by steel rods and required specialist on-site monitoring during erection to ensure that temporary loads did not exceed final design loads. Complex geometry and careful attention to detail was needed to achieve the intricate interface between glass and membrane. The amenity building houses the recreational facilities, including restaurant and badminton courts, for the staff at this prestigious centre.
