Cape Town Stadium
Cape Town, South Africa
African Renaissance
Sitting next to the Atlantic Ocean with the backdrop of Table Mountain, this new stadium in Green Point, built for the 2010 FIFA Wold Cup, is wrapped in a light PTFE-coated silver mesh glass fabric. The membrane is composed of expansive concave elements that form a cohesive flowing facade following the stadium's undulating shape. The stadium seats 68,000 spectators within a 'breathing bowl' of stretched skin providing a unique architectural experience for visitors. Not to be in competition with the horizontal datum line of Table Mountain, the profile of the stadium forms a sweeping silhouette with the eloquent membrane facade making the building appear almost scaleless.Following the World Cup the venue will host football and rugby matches.
